In the domains of water and waste-water treatment technology growing attention has been devoted during the past 2030 years to the study and analysis of hydraulic processes and problems related to the structures involved. These efforts have resulted in the gradual development of a new branch of applied hydraulics which, regarding the interrelated fields of water supply, sewerage, as well as water- and waste-water treatment technology as a unit, may be referred to as the collective term "municipal hydraulics". This special branch is interwoven with several chapters of traditional hydraulics, like pipes, open canals, structures, etc. At the same time, several new chapters on fluid mechanics, such as recent advances in research on the flow of two- and multiphase media and of non-Newtonian fluids have also been introduced for the solution of problems in "municipal hydraulics". In compiling the subjects for the present book the aim of the author was to present a comprehensive review and computation aids to the engineer dealing with hydraulic problems related to water and waste-water treatment. Moreover, the material is also of interest to those working in the field of applied hydraulic research, and in some curricula of higher education. Special care has been devoted to the choice of illustrations as well as on the results of original research work. The diagrams published provide welcome assistance to designers of hydraulic projects.
