Textbook of Physical Optics is a classic text on fundamentals of modern physical optics covering experimental and theoretical evolution of understanding of phenomenon of light. The book systematically develops the mathematical background to the study of physical optics. It covers the entire prescribed course of Interference, Diffraction and Polarisation of Light. The book discusses all types of grating and interferometers with emphasis on the general theory of grating, which comprises two-step, zigzag plane surfaces (the so-called echelette grating). From the general theory, theories of plane grating of the reflecting and refracting type, and echelon grating have been derived. The law of distribution of energy in the Michelson interferometer (giving the structure of spectral lines) has been deduced from the elementary theory of wave optics. Interference of polarised light has also been described in the book. The book is intended as a text for undergraduate honours and post
