Power Generation Operation & Control is a reference book written for the graduate and advanced graduate engineering students. This updated version deals with the latest and most important developments of the electric power industry. Although the content more or less remains the same, this edition offers a thorough treatment of the power flow-based techniques. The book emphasizes on the transmission network and discusses the effects of this network on power system operation. It covers an extended discussion on unit commitment and includes the LaGrange relaxation approach also. A new chapter on interchange transactions has been added in this book. It details the complications that may accompany a competitive market while generating electric energy. The sections dealing with security analysis have been updated in this book, and these now include the use of bounding and various contingency selection methods. The book uses applied optimization methods that are discussed to provide solutions for practical economic problems. The authors aim to introduce various engineering and economic matters that are used for planning, controlling, and operating power generation and transmission systems in electric utilities. A set of problems has been provided in each chapter that can be solved using a computer. Allen J. Wood teaches at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He works as an Adjunct Professor in the graduate Electric Power Engineering Program. Also, he is affiliated with Power Technologies, Inc., New York, and works as an independent consultant. Bruce F. Wollenberg works as a professor at the University of Minnesota and teaches electrical engineering. He also worked with Power Technologies, Inc., as a senior engineer and at Control Data Corporation as principal consultant.
