The book tells how Japan made an industrial effort to catch up with the wealthy and powerful advanced West despite its comparative poverty ofnatural resources, explaining how today, almost a century later having become a rich country, it faces a new challenge. Now Japan has to counter problems of an aging population. This means a rising need for better medical care for the long years after retirement, while the young require long years of education and technical training as well as wishing to spend some years for moratorium purposes before they enter the workplace to become productive workers. This is together with problems of feared shortages of fuel and other resources, continued destruction of the environment and rising ecological problems. The latter problems are more or less common among new economies in the world. Is Japan going to develop new ideas and devices for solving these problems? Is the West going to benefit learning from the effort and experiences of Japan in promoting the welfare of people?
