It is only recently that awareness has developed about the widespread prevalence of learning disabilities (LD) in India, both in urban and rural settings. As a consequence of this late realisation, there is a gross inadequacy of both rehabilitation services and special education programmes. What is more, assessment techniques and remedial measures are often influenced by largely inappropriate western methods and materials due to the paucity of Indian studies.
