This little book is based on the author's earlier work on HistoryOf India. It is in no way an abridgment of theformer work; on the contrary, some of the more importantportions of the narrative are told at greater length and with no attempt atcompression. The author has selected those periods of Indian history which appear to him to be the mostimportant and interesting- such as the reign of Asoka, the life of Mahmud ofGhazni, the Mubammadan Conquest, the reign of Akbar, the life of Sivaji, theIndian careers of Clive and Warren Hastings; and of these he has given atolerably full account, endeavouring to make the recital as interesting aspossible by inserting a good many illustrative anecdotes and stories. Of theintermediate periods he has given nothing more than the landmarks, suppressingall details not absolutely essential to a fairly intelligent acquaintance withthe general course of the history.
