In this book 31chapters covering wider topics in the field of environment, agroforestry and livestock management have been included. Subjects such as changing concepts in ecology, environmental sciences and grassland ecology; currnet trends and emerging scenario in Indian agriculture; agro-biodiversity and its conservation; silivi-pastoral research and management; water issues; agroforestry for different regions having specific goals; role of trees in carbon sequestration and soil amelioration have been incorporated under different chapters contributed by subject specialists. Under the sub-theme livestock, various aspects such as livestock and agroforestry interactions; reproduction disorders; methane emission and environment and other management issues have been highlighted. To make the document policy oriented aspects on intellectual property rights in relation to forage and livestock feeding; role of biotechnology in livestock and crop production and climate change and its consequences for crop production have been discussed.
Author Biography
s Dr S S Kundu, Guided four Ph.D. and five master’s degree students. He has published more than two hundred and fifty research publications along with eight books. In addition to teaching at masters and Ph.D. levels, his main areas of research are roughages quality evaluation and upgradation through application of chemical and biological treatment, feed technological techniques such as dendification of fibrous materials in form of complete feed blocks, feed and fodder evaluation by applying methodologies such as feed microscopy, Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System of franctionation (CNCP) etc. He has implemented the ICAR programme of Conservation and genetic improvement in Bhadawari buffaloes, Jalauni Sheep and Bundelkhandi Goats. He developed the feeding systems for livestock, based on watershed based silvopasture, grazing and stall feeding. Presently he is focusing on multi-enterprise based farming system research and peri-urban dairying. Dr. Om Prakash Chaturvedi presently working as Principal Scientist (Forestry & Agroforestry), NRC for Agroforestry, Jhansi, (U.P). and has established the concept on replacement of oak by pine forests in mid-Himalayas due to its higher nutrient conserving ability which results in reducing shortage of nitrogen in the soil. He has worked on structure, functional nutrient cycling of poplar based agro-forestry system in the lower Gangetic plains. He has also designed Acacia lenticularis and Litchi based agro forestry systems for river-bed areas of Bihar for higher economic returns. His has been bestowed with prestigious fellowships of National institute of ecology, and National Academy of Agricultural sciences New Delhi. Dr. J C Dagar, Principal Scientist, Central Soil Salinity Research institute Karnal, has published more than 180 research papers in International & National Journals, Proceedings of Symposia/Conferences and Chapters in Books; and authored four Books and four Research Bulletins. Dr. Dagar has worked in partnership and inter-disciplinary mode and contributed in developing economically viable, socially acceptable, environmentally sustainable and productive technologies to utilize marginal resources. Techniques of growing fruit and forest trees on highly alkali soils and degraded calcareous soils with use of saline water have been developed. Several salt-tolerant non-conventional crops of high value including medicinal and aromatic plants have been identified for cultivation on moderate alkali soil and degraded lands Using saline water particularly in dry regions. He has also done high standard work on mangroves, ecology of rainforests and also in the field of biodiversity of saline habitats and ethno-botany. Dr. S K Sirohi, working as Senior Scientist, Dairy Cattle Nutrition Division, National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal Joined Agricultural Research Service in 1993. He has 14 years teaching, research and extension experience. He has published about 135 research publications in National and International journals and conferences. He is guided three post graduate scholars and also written five books and technical reports on various topics in animal nutrition. Dr Sirohi worked on improvement of poor quality roughages. His area of research interest is energy and protein nutrition. Presently he is working in the area of climate change by mitigation of green house gas methane in Dariry animals through rumen microbial manipulations.
