The economy of India is the eleventh largest economy in the world by nominal GDP and the fourth largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). In the 1990s, following economic reform from the socialistinspired economy of postindependence India, the country began to experience rapid economic growth, as markets opened for international competition and investment. Rural communities have many distinctive assets that can provide a basis for economic development activities. Natural amenities like mountains, rivers, forests, wilflife, and open space are appealing to people and present unique opportunities for rural development. India's economic growth and development is predicated to a large extent upon the development of its 700million strong rural population. Since a very large labor force in agriculture necessarily implies very low per capita incomes, a substantial portion of India's current agricultural labour force has to move to nonagriculture sectors for incomes in all sectors to go up. The challenge is to manage the transition of a large segmentperhaps even 80 per centof the rural population from a villagecentric agriculturalbased economy to a citycentric nonagricultural economy, and do so in a reasonable period.
