This is a first major attempt to analyse the whole gamut of India's foreign policy during the fifty years of its independence. Combining different methodological approaches, the book is divided into three parts. The first is devoted to the factors that determine the country's foreign policy. The second part is on the four goals that are the very basis of India's behaviour vis-a-vis the outside world: Security, Modernisation, Regional hegemony and International role-playing. The third part pertains to decision making by systematically investigating the different institutions that are involved in the process.
