"A comprehensive and yet a college dictionary of legal terms is necessary for an understanding of the content and functioning of a legal system. Of particular importance is a dictionary which should serve the need of the student in this field and also the general public. An attempt has been made through the pages of this book to provide professional knowledge to those in the field and general knowledge to persons outside the field. The law student in India comes across legal terminology drawn not only from English but also from many regional and local languages. Laws which have had their origin in India, like personal laws, even when put into English, have to use several terms of ""the original language. Many principles and doctrines of English law owe their origin to Roman and other laws. The language of English law is, therefore, itself full of expressions foreign to the English language. The student needed a legal dictionary which would acquaint him with the enormous complexity of the language of law. The present work is an attempt in that direction. Law has to take its share of the impact of expanding human technology. Advancing technology is also showing its impact upon subjects like engineering, building, military and maritime matters, and also mercantile transactions. Words have, therefore, been collected from such fields and also from allied and applied fields and incorporated into the present""work. Apart from the above fields, words have also been taken from fields like banking, insurance, carriage, transport, arbitration, shipping, hoteling, lodging, boarding, construction, publishing, financing, processing, supply of energy, entertainment, amusement, purveying of news or other information. Apart from this, expressions used in science, art and commerce which have acquired a quasi-legal status and words frequently in use in revenue records and private documents have also been included. ""Legislative definitions have been incorporated together with judicial comments, if any. Such other words as have not been legislatively defined have been explained in terms of judicial expositions. A significant portion of the work consists of extracts from decisions of eminent judges, highlighting the golden quality of definitions and explanations of legal terms. The contribution of eminent authors in the field of law has also been fully utilised for the purpose of explaining terms which have not been statutorily or judicially defined, wherever necessary synonyms and antonyms have been brought into service for establishing a pin-point precision in the statement of meanings and scope of legal expressions. "Legal maxims have been inserted in their alphabetical order. The book carries almost an exhaustive collection of maxims together with suitable comments.
